Types of Dental Bridges

1. Traditional Bridges

Traditional bridges are the most common type. They consist of one or more false teeth (pontics) held in place by dental crowns (abutments) that are cemented onto the adjacent natural teeth. Ideal for situations where there are natural teeth on both sides of the gap left by the missing tooth, these bridges are known for their strength and reliability. The American Dental Association (ADA) provides further insights into traditional dental bridges.

2. Cantilever Bridges

Cantilever bridges are similar to traditional bridges but are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. In a cantilever bridge, the pontic is supported by a crown that is cemented to only one abutment tooth. For more details on cantilever bridges and their applications, visit the American College of Prosthodontists.

3. Maryland Bridges

Also known as a resin-bonded bridge, Maryland bridges are considered a conservative alternative to traditional bridges. These bridges consist of a pontic held in place by a metal or porcelain framework. This framework is bonded onto the backs of the two adjacent teeth. Since this type does not require crowns on the abutment teeth, it is less invasive. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) offers additional information on Maryland bridges.

4. Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges are used when multiple teeth are missing. Unlike traditional bridges, these are supported by dental implants rather than crowns or frameworks. Each missing tooth has an implant, providing a very stable and secure fit. Implant-supported bridges feel more like natural teeth and are a good option for those who have sufficient bone structure to support the implants. For a deeper understanding of implant-supported bridges, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) is an excellent resource.
